Ozone is a highly effective disinfectant. Its gaseous form means that it reaches places that conventional fluoride solutions cannot. Therefore it considerably reduces the risk of infections occurring again. What is more, it can be used in almost all application areas. Ozone is a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms and is a powerful oxidant. It is produced from oxygen and energy by absorbing UV radiation or by silent discharge such as in lightning. As early as 1785, the Dutch chemist Martius Van Marum was working with oxygen and electricity; in 1840, Schonbein discovered the gas mixture in its natural form and gave it its name. At the beginning of the 1930s, Dr. E.A. Fisch, a Swiss dentist, used ozone in dentistry for the first time. The actual active ingredient, however, is not ozone per se but rather only a small part of it: O1. Atomic oxygen has a bactericidal, fungicidal and viricidal effect and also alleviates pain and acts as an anti-inflammatory. It assists blood clotting and stimulates the immune system. Unlike antibiotics, ozone destroys all bacteria (by oxidation); resistance is not possible. Prozone, the new ozone generator from W&H, produces the gas mixture via corona discharge. In this process, air is pumped into the device, dried by a special filter, purified and then transferred to a chamber, where it is converted into an oxygen-ozone mixture via silent electrical discharge. This mixture arrives at the area that needs disinfecting via the handpiece and special disposable tips. Prozone only generates the minimum amount of ozone required for the disinfection. It is therefore impossible to overdose. W&H recommends using ozone as a disinfectant in the following areas: Surgery For disinfection after extractions or before inserting implants in dental practice. Attention: the device is not approved for use in the operating theatre. Restoration & prosthetics For disinfecting cavity preparations before re-filling. Periodontology For disinfecting deep periodontal pockets. Endodontics For disinfecting the root canal and the surrounding side canals.
